A vacant and derelict site at Southfield Lane in Whitwell has now been sold to Welbeck Estates following a competitive bidding process.

The land, extending over circa. 2.9 hectares (7.2 acres), has been vacant for over 25 years and transferred into the ownership of the Homes & Communities Agency as part of a portfolio transfer of non-operational coalfield sites.

The disposal to Welbeck Estates means that the site can be incorporated into prestigious major mixed use development proposals within the immediately surrounding area, currently being prepared by Welbeck Estates.

Rachel Lister, Director at Thomas Lister commented;

“The disposal of this long term vacant site, to Welbeck Estates who have strong historical ties in Whitwell, means that the opportunity to deliver major regeneration to Whitwell can finally move towards becoming a reality”.

Daren Ridout from Welbeck Estates added;

“This site forms an important piece of the jigsaw towards delivering a comprehensive regeneration proposal for the former Whitwell Colliery site  that will offer jobs, homes and a restored tip for the local community”.
